Kamundu is a 155ha coffee farm first established by British colonists but is now one of 6 estates owned and operated by Sasini, a publicly listed company with a majority Kenyan ownership. Sasini’s estates have long placed an emphasis on equity and community. In the case of the estates’ workers this involves the provision of living quarters, early child education, union membership and guaranteed payment above minimum wage. In collaboration with Covoya and our customers, they have also been able to invest further in the local primary school Njenga Karume. This has principally been through the building of a new computer lab to equip students with the IT skillset to maximise their opportunities in an increasingly digital world. The Process This lot employs a traditional Kenyan fully washed process. This processing regimen is seen throughout Kenya's specialty coffee regions and is supported by many generations of shared knowledge and skill. Selected cherries are pre-graded and then de-pulped. The pulped coffee is then fermented for 12 - 48 hours in water tanks to breakdown the remaining mucilage on the bean. After fermentation the coffee, still in its husk (parchment) is washed in clean water grading channels. This series of declining channels allows the heaviest, densest beans to sink. These are processed separately as they represent the highest quality beans. After washing the parchment is soaked in clean water and then dried in the sun on raised African beds for 2-3 weeks where it is periodically turned and covered to protect against moisture or the heat of the midday sun. The Region Kiambu county is located just outside of Nairobi city. The region has a long history of coffee production and is famous for its large estates, which were originally established by British colonists in the early 20th century. After decolonisation the estates were sold to local Kenyans who have been managing them since. While estates such as this used to produce the majority of Kenyan coffee, the increased urban sprawl from Nairobi, as well as the increasing land value in the region has meant that estate coffee production has gradually diminished, while smallholder production elsewhere has increased. Nevertheless, estates such as these continue a legacy of many generations of coffee production, supported by unparalleled local knowledge and experience. Kiambu has all the ingredients for arabica coffee to flourish: it is close to the equator, has iron rich, semi-volcanic soils, abundant sunshine and consistently high altitudes up to 2,000masl. These beneficial conditions give way to coffee trees that thrive and yield denser cherries with the potential for distinctive and diverse flavors. \n\nFamilies of the smallholder coffee farmers, tending to no more than five hectares in this locality predominantly grow SL 28 and SL 34 varieties, as they had been working with coffee before the popularization of cultivars Ruiru 11 and Batian. Upon harvest, they bring the cherries to Gakuyuini to maximize their coffees’ flavor potential and consequently improve their earnings, consequently contributing to their capability to continue cultivating high quality coffee. \n\nSL 28 and SL 34 are the traditional varieties cultivated in the country since the early 1900s. They have the potential for high cup quality and high yields, but also highly vulnerable to adverse elements. The AA-grade indicates this coffee is of the highest quality, determined by the beans’ size and density according to the regulations governing the Kenyan coffee trade.\n\nIt is a long held belief that the washed process fully unmasks a coffee’s authentic character allowing the consumer to taste variety and terroir. It is still the norm for post-harvest processing at the cooperative-run coffee factories in Kenya. Selectively hand picked ripe cherries are further sorted for defects before being sent into pulping, which removes the skin and pulp from the seed. Residual mucilage is then removed through fermentation in tanks, followed by washing to scrub off any remaining traces of mucilage, and a soak. \n\nThis lot grown by the Thirikwa Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society and processed at the Gakuyuini factory, i.e. washing station or wet mill, was fermented in a shaded area and stable ambient temperatures for approximately 24 hours. Following this, they are moved to tanks where they sit under water for a further 24 hours. After soaking, the coffee is spread out on raised beds and allowed to dry for seven to 15 days.\n\nThe Kainamui washing station does more than simply allow local farmers to process their coffee, it also supports its members by providing them with financial assistance for school fees, farming needs.\n\nVarietals: The smallholders mainly have SL 28, SL 34, and Ruiru 11.\n\nGrade: AA, AB and PB refers to the bean size. \n\nProduction process: Cherries are hand sorted for unripe and overripe cherries by the farmers before they go into production. A disc pulping machine removes the skin and pulp. The coffees are graded by density into 3 grades by the pulper. Grade 1 and 2 go separately to fermentation. Grade 3 is considered a low grade. \n\nThe coffee is fermented for 16-24 hours under closed shade. After fermentation, the coffees are washed and again graded by density in washing channels and are then soaked under clean water from the Gatomboya stream for 16-18 hours. \n\nDrying: Sun dried up to 21 days on African drying beds. The facility lies in Kenya's renowned Nyeri County, near the town of Tetu.\n\nMutheka FCS is a very new organisation that was created in 2004 after the Giant Tetu Coffee Growers Co-Operative Society split. The FCS is located in Nyeri County, east of the Aberdare Ranges and west of Mt. Kenya, and manages seven factories with a total membership of approximately 6,000 small-scale coffee growers. Kiandu Factory has almost 1,900 registered members, making it one of Mutheka's largest. Only a small percentage of Kenyan coffee factories actively deliver coffee in any given year.\n\nTo create this lot, handpicked coffee cherries were sent to the mill the same day and carefully sorted. Employees from the factory carefully supervised the procedure to prevent any underripe or damaged cherries from being accepted. Any unwanted coffee got sent home to be dried and used as low-quality 'Mbuni' natural-process coffee with a low price at the end of the season. Backstory

The Mutwewathi Factory is situated in Mukurweini Subcounty, Nyeri County, on the eastern slopes of the Aberdare Ranges. Owned by the New Gikaru Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), this factory is one of five wet mills run by the cooperative, which was registered in 2001 and today counts more than 4,600 members. Alongside Mutwewathi, the cooperative operates Ichamara, Thangathi, Kahuro, and Kiuu factories, each contributing to Nyeri’s reputation as a benchmark region for Kenyan coffee.

Coffee at Mutwewathi is grown by around 750 smallholder members of the cooperative. Each farmer tends small plots, often less than 5 acres, cultivating coffee in the fertile volcanic soils that define Nyeri. Cherries are carefully handpicked at peak ripeness and delivered to the factory for processing.

At the factory, the cherries undergo the traditional Kenyan fully washed process. First, they are sorted to remove underripe and defective fruit, then pulped to strip away the outer skin. The resulting parchment coffee ferments in concrete tanks for 12 to 16 hours, with the exact time determined by climate and temperature. Fermentation breaks down the sticky mucilage, after which the parchment is washed in clean water and passed through grading channels. During peak harvest, when raised beds are fully occupied, the parchment is soaked in circulating water for up to 24 hours before being transferred to dry. Drying takes place on raised beds and solar dryers, lasting 7 to 21 days. Workers turn the parchment regularly and cover it during the hottest hours to ensure even drying and prevent defects — a hallmark of Kenya’s attention to detail.

This AA lot is composed of SL28 and SL34, two cultivars developed by Scott Agricultural Laboratories (SAL) during the 1930s and 1940s. These varieties became widely adopted for their deep root systems, which help them thrive even under limited rainfall, and for their balance of yield, disease resistance, and exceptional cup quality. Together, they form the backbone of Kenya’s coffee identity, producing the complex fruit-forward profiles the country is celebrated for.

Kenya’s coffee industry, while starting later than in neighboring countries, has built a global reputation for excellence. Today, more than 600,000 smallholders farm less than 5 acres each, yet collectively produce nearly 70% of the country’s coffee.
