Some farmers walk over 5 kilometers to deliver their coffee cherries—an act of true dedication. The area teems with wildflowers, subsistence crops like potatoes, cabbage, and cassava, and is naturally shaded by acacia and banana trees. Heza sits dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Kibira Rainforest along the Burundi-Rwanda border. Its high altitude, temperate climate, and proximity to the forest create an ideal microclimate for growing exceptional coffee. Key to improving coffee quality here are Long Miles Coffee scouts and agronomists Anicet and Patrice. They’ve tackled the antestia bug (linked to the potato defect), guided farmers on pruning and fertilization, and led the construction of water channels for rainwater irrigation. About This Field Blend Varietal tracking in Burundi is challenging, but Red Bourbon and Mibirizi are known to grow here. Based on historical patterns, SL34 is also likely present, though in unknown proportions. About Long Miles Coffee Project Founded in 2011 by Ben and Kristy Carlson, Long Miles Coffee began with just 50 growers and now supports over 5,500. Their mission: to help roasters source top-quality coffees while supporting farmers. Their work has transformed Burundi’s coffee landscape—socially, economically, and environmentally—and their coffees remain some of the most anticipated each year.
