Indonesia Kerinci Honey from Skylark Coffee

Description

Indonesian coffees have become a mainstay of ours in the past couple of years. As climate change affects global coffee production, it's increasingly important to diversify our sourcing and build relationships with farmers all over the world. We loved the coffee we got from the Koerintji Barokah Bersama Cooperative in Kerinci last year, so we're thrilled to feature four new lots from them this year — starting with this delicious honey process. This is a really unusual honey that cups more like a washed coffee! We think it has notes of green apple, tangerine, and pecan pie. We're only getting a tiny amount, so don't miss out on trying this special lot.  We sourced this coffee through our friends at Sucafina. You can read a bit more about their work with the Koerintji Barokah Bersama Cooperative below. The Cooperative has 320 members who live and work on a plateau at the foot of Mount Kerinci, one of the 452 volcanoes that make up the Pacific Ring of Fire. The frequent eruptions make for extremely fertile volcanic soil, so the growing area is beautiful, lush, and extremely biodiverse.  About 50% of the land in the Kerinci region is part of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, so agricultural activity is quite restricted — and this has actually led to some great innovations in terms of sustainability and processing. One example is the 'Payment for Ecosystem Services' (PES) program in conjunction with Sucafina and Rikolto, a local NGO. PES has initiated several projects, including a huge compost facility where the co-op can make its own organic compost to sell and use, and the distribution of plants to facilitate intercropping practices for shade.  Rikolto has done a lot of work in the region. In Kerinci, they calculated that many farmers fell short of making a living income. Projects like PES marry financial and ecological interests, so we're excited to be able to support them whilst benefiting from extremely tasty coffee. Here is a link to a video showing more about their fantastic work.  Elevation: 1400-1700 MASL Varietal: Andung Sari, Sigarar Utang Cup score: 86 Price paid per kg: £9.36 Process: Honey
