About the farm The Franceschi family immigrated to Panama in 1800 from France. In Panama, they were involved in multiple enterprises, including cattle ranching, farming and ship building. In 1950, Carmen Franceschi suggested to her husband, Efrain, to start a coffee plantation. They named the plantation Carmen Estate in honor of this insightful suggestion. Today, the farm is operated by Carlos Aguilera Franceschi, the third generation of the family. The farm is located in Paso Ancho, Tierras Altas of Chiriqui region, and the elevation is up to 1900 masl. The valley’s micro-region is heavily influenced by its proximity to both Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. The cool, frost-free nights typical of the area are coupled with dry, sun-drenched days which, together, create optimal growing conditions. Paso Ancho’s pairing of excellent volcanic black soils with an outstanding micro-environment has led to its recognition as one of the finest coffee growing regions in the wold. "Franceschi" is a project created by Carlos and his partner Jean Paul Langenstein. They process the coffee cherries of their own lots, but also collaborate with local farmers in the region. It aims to source the finest cherries and experiment with various fermentation techniques to bring out the very best in every bean.
