Aragash Gelcha
Tasting Notes
Description
Aragash Gelcha farms five hectares in Halo Shashemene, a village in Ethiopia’s Gedeb district at 2,150 masl. Alongside coffee, she grows enset (false banana) and fruit trees to help support her family of 12 children. Since Ethiopia revised its coffee export laws in 2018, Aragash has held an export license, though she continues to face systemic and logistical challenges in reaching stable, fair markets. Despite this, her family remains committed to the farm, producing around 800 kg of green coffee per hectare and working together year-round to maintain sustainable growing practices. This coffee underwent the natural process. Whole cherries are sun-dried in thin layers. Constant turning of the cherries is required to ensure even drying and to prevent the occurrence of defects. Sourced through Omwani Coffee Company, in partnership with Mecota Trading, an Ethiopian exporter established in 2023. Mecota works with smallholder farmers across Ethiopia’s coffee regions, consolidating microlots into exportable quantities while promoting traceable, direct trade practices. Price Paid for Green Coffee (ex. shipping): £11.50/kg Amount Purchased: 60kg Harvest: October - February 2025
